May 9, 2018 - Specialized tourist magazine from Germany “Uptrend Magazine” published a text on the successfully implemented project of the Montenegrin Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism – “Krug oko Korita” (eng. Circle around Korita). This project was a special part of the program “Development of panoramic roads.” The mentioned article was published in the section “The Most Beautiful Roads of the World” and readers can gain insight about roads all over the world. Concerning the Montenegrin Korita, this article explains in detail this panoramic route, with inspiring descriptions of the area on the route. Parts of this article will feature translated parts of what has been published in the German “Uptrend Magazine.”

Mountain landscapes that take your breath away with their deep canyons, endless sights of the distance ahead and ancient villages can be found in Montenegro and experienced through the diversity of traveling through Korita. Korita is not far away from your dreams and it is not far away from Podgorica either, the capital of this southern European country.

“Circle around Korita” is the first sufficiently enriched marked panoramic road in Montenegro, which starts in Podgorica and leads through 65 kilometers of mountain area of Kuci, and all the way to the edge of the River Cijevna Canyon. It is great for a one-day trip because it only takes two or three hours to dive into an entirely different world. The entrance to this world is available due to panoramic paths and roads which take passengers through a variety of landscapes, cultures, and regions.

The very road starts at Podgorica, the capital of Montenegro, and precisely in the old town district – Stara Varos. Here, visitors can see Sat Kula (Clock Tower), then the Temple, and numerous historical bridges and museums. North of the city center are the ruins of the town Duklja, which is first mentioned as a colony of the Roman Empire in the second century. On this road, travelers will pass through many old villages that genuinely preserve lifestyle as it was in old Montenegro.

Tourists interested in history can have their peace of mind at the very first stop of this journey. Ten kilometers from Podgorica, there is medieval Fortress Medun, which derives from the Illyrian mastermind of the Meteon. This place is considered one of the oldest buildings in this part of the Balkans. The Roman legions conquered Medun 167 years before the new era and captured last Illyrian King Gence. Later, Medun became a city that lasted for more than two millennia.

This journey continues in the direction of Kucka Korita through the town of Ubli, the traditional seat of the Kuci trive, by which the region is named. This area gives the insight of how people lived in old villages as farmers, due to many family farms that are still up and running. After about 40 kilometers of winding roads, travelers will reach an enormous wild forest, giving an impression of untouched and wild nature that is lives another life different from its surroundings. Continuing down this road, visitors will eventually reach Kucka Korita, and while it stands at an altitude of 1300 meters, it provides a pleasant temperature during the summer, and in the winter there is often plenty of snow.

In the village of Korita, at 1833 meters up high, lies Hum Orahovski, which houses one Catholic and two Orthodox churches. In the Orthodox Church of St. Elijah, old Montenegrin tribes used to meet to make important decisions together. At this location there is also the House of God, which was damaged in the 1950s, was destroyed during a major earthquake in 1979 and was finally restored in 1993.
