Montenegro is resolved to assume its part of the responsibility towards the European security, stability, and prosperity of the continent, said the President Milo Djukanovic. Djukanovic, who visited Brussels, had a meeting with the President of the European Parliament (EP), Antoni Tajani.

June 6, 2018 - Tajani congratulated Djukanovic for election as president, estimating that it is good news for Montenegro and their path to the EU.

"Montenegro is an integral part of Europe not only geographically, but Montenegro can be an example of a fast-paced union by 2025, hopefully," he said after the meeting with Djukanovic.

He said that Djukanovic's leadership is essential, as this process is political rather than bureaucratic.

"It is important to give you a clear perspective and to point out that the path to the EU is something that is not a recoverable process," Tajani said.

He noted that cooperation needs to be increased to deal more efficiently with the various challenges in the area of security and the danger of terrorism.

"As the EU, we must stand by in the battle against nationalist and populist plans and Islamic radicalization," Tajani said.

He said that he believes in the work and development of the specific projects that will further bring Montenegro and the EU closer.

"Integration into the EU ensures stronger economic and other development in Montenegro and the Balkans," Tajani said.

Djukanovic said that with Tajani he shared the satisfaction for what Montenegro had done so far on the road to its development and that they agreed on the issue that represents the priority of the future development.

"It was my pleasure to hear from Tajani the extraordinary dedication of the EP, all European institutions, and its personnel, to the further European prosperity and keeping the credible European future for the countries of the Western Balkans," Djukanovic said.

He said that the fundamental preoccupation is to improve the quality of life in Montenegro and to provide the European standard to citizens.

"He also explained our resolution to take part, as part of Europe and Europeans, of the responsibility for the European security, stability, and prosperity of the European continent," said Dukanovic.

He stated that he agreed with Tajikistan that the Summit in Sofia brought what was objectively possible under the circumstances.

"And with his conclusions, he opened a perspective for certain improvements in the standards of people living in the Western Balkans," said Djukanovic.

He said that he accepted the invitation of Tajani to address the EP session in October.
