Looking from Croatia, Montenegro truly is a country of wild beauty, as the national tourist board slogan claims. Parts of it are perhaps a little too wild for me, but the best bits are very, very good indeed.
As today's rich and famous moor their superyachts in Porto Montenegro and soon Lustica Bay, some of the world's top celebrities are visiting this rising star on the Adriatic, which is quietly putting itself on the map of luxury tourism.
Montenegro is no stranger to famous visitors, and Sveti Stefan, for example, played host to a number of top movie stars and royalty back in the say, but perhaps not so well known is that the acting career of one Brad Pitt was launched in Kotor, way back in 1988. An A-list superstar today, who commands many millions for a role, the young Brad of 1988 was happy to work for seven weeks on the shooting of The Dark Side of the Sun for a paltry US$1,523 for his first lead role, where he was chosen ahead of 400 others to star in the film, and he was selected by director Bozidar Nikolic.
Perhaps 'star' is too strong a term, as the film was never released in the cinema, due to lack of entertainment value, but was released instead on video some nine years later in 1997. And with the wonders of modern social media and video sharing sites, here it is for you to enjoy in its entirety - Mr. Brad Pitt in his first lead role, in the Dark Side of the Sun, shot right here in Kotor.
