October 5, 2018 - The Herceg Novi Municipality has once again demonstrated what it means to lead socially responsible politics and work in the interests of citizens. The local government provided free textbooks for 1,054 pupils of the first three grades of elementary schools "Milan Vukovic", "Ilija Kišić", "Dašo Pavišić" and "Orjenski bataljon".  EUR 51,000 was allocated from the Municipality budget for free sets of textbooks.

This is not the first time that local government in Herceg Novi has provided free textbooks. In the previous years, the municipality also donated books to all the pupils in this town. However, this year the municipality has gone a step further. Thus, by means of the Secretariat for Culture and Education, textbooks for 1,054 students were provided: 337 in the first grade, 334 in the second grade and 383 in the third grade.

The Secretariat for Culture and Education said that the Herceg Novi municipality provides a valuable and useful gift to young fellow citizens going through education but also significantly helps their parents. Also, the President of the Municipality, Stevan Katić, pointed out that the municipality will not stop at this.

"We intend to provide a set of textbooks for all the children in the elementary school in our town for the following year. Unfortunately, this year we could not do this because we were limited by the planned Budget, and we are talking about funds that are not small. This item will be planned in the Budget for 2018 in order to provide free books to all the elementary scholars," said the President of the Municipality, Stevan Katić. Speaking about the schooling and assistance provided by the municipality to the students and their parents, it should be emphasized that the local administration, in addition to textbooks, also provided free school transportation throughout the school year to all students from the Herceg Novi villages and suburban settlements, those whose families are in a difficult financial situation and residents of Children's home "Mladost". In addition, the Municipality also provided complete school supplies for families with poor material status.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS FOR THE BEST STUDENTS

Textbooks are just one example of how the municipal government helps educate young people. The local self-government has decided to reward the best and help the most successful students in Herceg Novi.

The Municipality of Herceg Novi, through the Secretariat for Culture and Education, has launched the Contest for Student Scholarships and Awards for 2018/2019. The competition is foreseen for the best student of the final year of studies, as well as scholarships for the most successful students from Herceg Novi.

As reported by the Secretariat for Culture and Education, the local government is determined to help successful school students, as young people and their education are the most valuable resource. "We are conscious of the fact that continuous investment in young people should be a strategic plan for local government, changes to the Scholarship Decision have defined an opportunity to reward the best. We recall that the draft of the Youth Strategy proposed a series of stimulating measures when young people are concerned," said Secretary of Culture for Education Ana Zambelić Pištalo.

The best thing about the dedication of the town’s administration to help young people is the fact that persons with disabilities, members of the Roma community, material benefit recipients as well as students who, during previous schooling, have been sent to the Children's Home "Mladost" in Bijela by the decision of the competent Center for Social Work as children without parental care, can have a right to a scholarship, regardless of the average grades rating from the previous year.

In this way, the overgrown greenery from several sides of the fortress was removed. It should be noted that the municipality took care of everything, so that part of the greenery was left in a place that was recognized by tourists and visitors as a place to rest in the shade. As stated by the Secretariat for Culture and Education, Fortress Forte Mare will be ambiently illuminated in the forthcoming period, and the local government will not issue permits for the work of catering facilities near the fortress.
