Sustainable Green Waste Management From Agricultural Production Roundtable Held in Tivat

May 25, 2018 - The Round Table "Sustainable Green Waste Management From Agricultural Production", as part of the "Active Agro Publicity" project, was held in the Tivat Municipality and organized by NGO “Eco Center Delfin”, "Boka" Olive Society and the Association of Private Owners of Forests and Farmers of Herceg Novi. The event was held in cooperation with the Municipalities of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi.

Petar Vujović, secretary of the Secretary Office for Economic Development and Entrepreneurship of the Municipality of Tivat, said that the municipality provided the maximum support from the very beginning, adding that they had access to the revision of the existing decision on the incentive in agriculture by increasing the amount of 20.000 to 25.000 EUR per year.

Through the project "Active Agro Publicity" over the past 12 months, we worked on informing and educating decision-makers, said independent Advisor on Water Management and Agriculture, Radmila Kilibarda, and pointed out that the general objective of the project, which lasted for a year, was to establish the sustainable management of green waste from agricultural production through the active participation of the civil sector. She said that looking at the whole project; they can say it was successful in that sector, pointing out that there is still a lot of work, especially on educating and raising awareness of the importance, advantages and methods of waste management from agricultural production.

During the Round Table, Ljilja Radunović from NGO "Eco Centar Delfin" talked about the results achieved and future activities to improve the sustainable management of green waste from agricultural production and cooperation of the local government, NGOs and agricultural producers. Radunović extracted data from MONSTAT - the State Institute for Statistics of Montenegro, according to 670,190 people that live in Kotor, Tivat and Herceg Novi, of which 1,055 were registered households, engaged in agricultural production. Also, according to data from MONSTAT 364 households were registered in Kotor, 169 in Tivat, and 522 agricultural producers in Herceg Novi. Agricultural production refers to the cultivation of olive and olive oil, which, according to MONSTAT, represents 41.6% of the total production. Apart from olives, this area is also recognized for the production of citrus (lemon, orange, grapefruit). The roundtable presented the realized activities: the publication of an informative - educational brochure, and training on the sustainable management of green waste from agricultural production in the municipalities of Tivat, Kotor and Herceg Novi, in which 45 composters were distributed. An analysis of the management of green waste was conducted by which a report on the analysis was prepared in the project municipalities. Vesna Vukić from the Association "Boka Olive Grove Society " praised the cooperation with all the affected municipalities and organizations, pointing out the partnership as an instrument for achieving specific benefits.

Participants of the roundtable presented the platform on future cooperation, distributed brochures and handbooks titled "Sustainable management of green waste from agricultural production-composting," "Principles of good agricultural practice" and "Calendar of agricultural works."

The platform, which was signed yesterday between the organizer and the Municipality of Tivat, presented by the president of “Eco Center Delfin”, Žarko Radulović, said that the platform is a binding act for the non-governmental sector, noting that the NGO "Eco Center Delfin" was the first in Montenegro to publicize the idea of composting.

 The project "Active Agro Public" is implemented as part of the EU support program - Sustainable Agriculture for a Sustainable Balkans: "Strengthening the capacity of NGOs in advocating and developing policies in the Western Balkans", implemented by ORCA (Serbia) and a consortium of partners: ACTIVE (Kosovo *), FLOROZON (Macedonia), CZIP (Montenegro) and IEP (Albania).
