May 20, 2018 - The Public Sea Management Company and the Marine Biology Institute from Kotor are Montenegrin partners in the project "WELCOME" (WatEr Landscape Sustainability through Reuse of Marine Litters), implemented under the Interreg IPA cross-border program cooperation for Italy, Albania and Montenegro.
The goal of the project is sustainable beach management, focusing on waste issues that come from the sea, beach erosion and sun protection as well as strengthening cross-border cooperation between institutions in Italy, Albania, and Montenegro.
The activities of this project will be aimed at removing sea waste from the beach, monitoring the situation and selecting the waste following adopted EU-based methodology, restoring and fencing the dunes and protecting the sandy beaches from erosion using the wood waste collected from the beach and drawing up a cross-marine waste that should contribute to the establishment of a sustainable and long-lasting marine waste management system.
The project involves six partner institutions from Italy, Albania and Montenegro, and the leading partner of the WELCOME project is CoNISM - the National Interdisciplinary Consortium for Marine Sciences from Italy.
The initial meeting, officially commencing the realization of this project, was held in mid-April in the town of Lecce in Italy, and according to the dynamics of project activities, all project partners will realize the first action of cleaning and sorting waste at selected beaches by the end of May. The cleaning actions of the selected beaches will be accomplished six times during the realization of the project to compare the data and identify the type and origin of the waste that comes from the sea and the mouth of the river.
This project will cover parts of Velika plaža in Ulcinj, parts of Bečići Beach in Budva and parts of the Blato beach in Herceg Novi. The first action of cleaning and sorting waste by the Public Sea Management Company and the Institute of Marine Biology at these beaches was realized on Thursday, May 18th in Herceg Novi. The following activities will take place on May 24 in Ulcinj and on May 25 in Budva.
