October 13, 2018 - The Municipality of Herceg Novi has readily welcomed the tourist season, which was more than successful. In the pre-season (March, April and May) there were 35% more tourists in the town than in the previous year. Also, in the post-season (September and October), the good trend of guest visits continued. Thus, compared to last year, there was a growth of 40%, so in Herceg Novi currently, there are 6,073 tourists, of whom most are foreign tourists - 5,448 compared to 625 domestic tourists.

In the last 12 months, there are three new hotels opened on the territory of the Herceg Novi municipality, one of which is owned by the municipality. In order to improve the tourist offer of Herceg Novi, Hotel “Play” was opened in the Igalo Sports Center, which is owned by the Municipality. The hotel will work throughout the year with the focus on the development of sports tourism both in the summer and in the winter. The Hotel "Play" offers a rich program of sports and recreational facilities: accommodation units, restaurant, sports fields, halls, as well as organizing the trainings, camps, tournaments and competitions.

In conversation with the President of the Municipality of Herceg Novi, Stevan Katić, we learned that the local government finally defined the status of the hotel and that the Municipality invested significant funds for its arrangement.

"This is a good example for all other local self-government in Montenegro, so in a responsible way, one municipality may have its own hotel. Also, this is a good example for the country conducting privatization arrangements in which we can make our own strengths and through the hosting relationship that we have, work, create and accountably contribute to the development of tourism, which this year is making significant progress compared to the previous ones," said Katić.

Besides the Hotel "Play", two other hotels were opened in the territory of Herceg Novi: Lazure Hotel in Meljine and Iberostar in Njivice.

THE OLD RAILWAY TUNNEL LALOVINA WAS OPENED

One of the successfully completed projects that enriched the Herceg Novi municipality tourist offer was the old railway tunnel Lalovina. After five decades, the tunnel was redone as a hiking trail connecting Meljine and Zelenika. The project was implemented by the local administration through the Agency for Construction and Development, "Komunalno Stambeno" and "Čistoća", with the help of the Protection and Rescue Service. The project includes: asphalting the trails, setting up public lighting in the tunnel and in the approaching paths, followed by benches, and the plateau in Zelenicka was also arranged and the area was refined with olive, lime, oleanders and eucalyptus plants.

The local self-government informed that the intention of the Municipality to provide a safe and secure pedestrian zone is provided in all parts of the town, as well as it is already being done on the projects of the construction of a sidewalk through Zmijica in Zelenica, from Bijela to Kamenari.

"This is what is extremely different today, compared to what my associates and I found here when we visited the local communities in September. Then it was almost impossible to go through the tunnel, and today it has a new function. We have a new, representative pedestrian communication, which is for the benefit of the locals in Meljine and Zelenika and all the citizens of Herceg Novi," said the President of the Municipality Stevan Katić.

The story of the railway in Herceg Novi and Boka started on July 16th, 1901, when the first train from Sarajevo arrived at the station in Zelenika at 11am. Railway traffic through Herceg Novi was in operation until 1968, when the line was marked as unprofitable and the existing line was abolished. The Municipality of Herceg Novi continued with town planning projects. Therefore, the pedestrian path in Igalo was reconstructed. This is a section in Sava Ilic Street, from the hotel "Palmon bay" to the end of the Youth Park. The realization of this project made the town look nicer, but it also made it easier for the numerous pedestrians to pass accordingly, as it is a frequent route linking large accommodation capacities - the two phases of "Dr Simo Milošević" Institute, the Palmon bay Hotel and the Lighthouse with the rest of the settlement. Thus, the inhabitants of Igalo have a new sidewalk, lighting, benches and at the same time there are 30 new mimosa trees planted. For the realization of this project, the municipality has allocated 126,000 euros.

As reported by the Agency for Construction and Development, the reconstruction of this sidewalk can be an example of good practice for future projects.

"When you look at how many people circulate this sidewalk, you see that there really was a need for the reconstruction.”

The sidewalk had been rather inconvenient for pedestrians, especially for cyclists, disabled people or parents with baby carts and children. This is certainly a great improvement in the looks of the Igalo center, Lučić said and added that two new smart bus stops will soon to be installed in Igalo with a more modern look and function, added Boro Lučić, director of the Agency.
