03 October 2018 - Montenegro must face many challenges on its way towards the European Union. Firstly, rule of law, and then the freedom of media and fight against corruption, said Robert Weber, German ambassador to Montenegro.

Journalists asked him how he sees the situation regarding freedom of the media in Montenegro and he said that freedom of media and rule of law represent necessary prerequisites for the progress of a society and common life in the “joint European house”.

“Not only does this apply to candidate countries but also to the Member States. European perspective requires facing the issues from the domain of the rule of law, freedom of media and freedom of speech. Unsolved murders are a heavy burden for everybody affected: family members, friends but also for the security authorities,” said Weber.

He pointed out that Montenegro has already made great success within the accession negotiations with the European Union.

“What has been considered impossible can become reality. Brave political decisions and commitment of citizens can make it happen. Montenegro has become a leader among the Balkan countries in the accession process and this position should be maintained in the forthcoming years. We will face all the challenges together,” concluded Weber.
