October 21, 2018 - On Friday, from 5 to 8 p.m., a coordinated action by the employees of OGG Nautical Unit in Herceg Novi, the Fisheries Inspectorate and members of the civic action "Stop Poaching" found and removed a large quantity of illegal fishing gear, at unlabeled places, it was said by the informal group of sport fishing and nature lovers of Montenegro "Stop Poaching".

"With this action, we reacted to numerous requests on our page, but also from the police and fisheries inspectors, which involved the presence of a large number of nets, weirs, and similar fishing tools, which are used illegally and in unauthorized locations, but also without the necessary permits," the activists said on their Facebook page.

The found fishing tools that were properly installed and marked, and with the validity of the issued license, were left at the locations where they were found. However, 15 weirs and over 1200 m nets were extracted. The catch was returned to the sea, while the weirs and nets were destroyed and temporarily disposed of at Zelenika Port, where they will be removed in the agreement with the utility inspection and the company "Gradska cistoca”.

On a relatively small surface that has been processed, the amount of poaching tools found is enormous and worrying, therefore members of the "Stop Poaching" action will intensively deal with this problem in the following period and, in cooperation with the competent institutions, conduct more frequent controls at various locations

In addition to the poaching, these unmarked nets and weirs pose threats to the lives of divers, swimmers, but also those who sail onto them, because they are placed on waterways, beaches, estuaries, without any markings and in huge quantities, they warn.

"The size of the nets and weirs to the licensees is clearly legally prescribed, and the length of the net is limited to a maximum of 160 m. The found poaching tools were legally illegitimate due to the size of the net but also the length of the same," the members of this action said.

"And whether someone's poaching act is easier or harder, it's not up to us to decide! We are here to give the maximum within our possibilities, to try with all of you, to stop the poaching in all its forms, and that what remains after it in our waters is preserved! Are they always happy with our work, they are probably not, therefore our appeal that any help is welcomed by us is always ongoing because we cannot do everything! Just because someday everyone would be happy with what the Stop Poaching action has achieved, you should support our work, the work of the Police, the Inspectorate, the MPRR, and other institutions involved because this fight is not only ours but of all those living in Montenegro!

Let's go on," they concluded.
