07 October 2018 - Minister of Science, Sanja Damjanović, paid an official visit to the Republic of Austria and met with the Federal Minister of Education, Science and Research, Heinz Fassmamn. Minister Damjanović visited the renowned MedAustron research centre, one of the four European centres in which ion therapy is administered.

Science Minister Damjanović pointed to the importance of the so far scientific and technological cooperation, especially emphasising the quality of bilateral projects, which encompass a wide range of scientific and research areas. The Minister placed the focus on the project of establishing the International Institute for Sustainable Technologies in South East Europe, presenting the current status of the project, ongoing activities at the Preparatory Stage, and the importance of supporting the Republic of Austria in the further implementation of the project.

Minister Fassmann agreed that the research infrastructure is quite relevant for the future development of the Region. Regarding the potential cooperation in capacity building with MedAustron, as well as numerous possibilities for cooperation in research and innovation, especially with institutions such as the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) and the Centre for Competence for Excellence in Technologies (COMET), the Minister proposed a joint seminar, during which direct suggestions of modalities of cooperation in this area could be made in a direct dialogue.

The visit to MedAustron, one of the four ion-therapy centres in Europe was following a meeting of ministers. The director of MedAustron, Alfred Zens, gave a brief presentation of the development of the MedAustron project, which began to apply ion therapy in 2016 but also acknowledged the interest of MedAustron to support the training of young researchers.
