September 20, 2018 - Contrary to the proposed plan of constructing a 500-bed hotel and a marina with 50 berths on the island of St. Nikola, the NGO "Porat Budva-Pizana" will organize a peaceful protest on September 26th.

"Dear fellow citizens, you are aware that the NGO "Porat Budva - Pizana" is committed to preserving the island of Saint Nikola-Školj in its natural form.

The island St. Nikola is the largest Montenegrin island in the Adriatic and represents a natural pearl not only for the town of Budva but for the whole country of Montenegro. As such, it is invaluable and its importance should be preserved from the construction of hotels and yacht marinas.

We believe that it is necessary that the valorization of the island goes to the development of the concept of a forest park and a modern excursion for locals as well as for tourists, with all amenities that provide easy recreation and a stay in nature, which is lacking in the tourist offer of Budva," said the statement by NGO "Porat Budva-Pizana".

The urbanization of the island is contrary to all international conventions, as well as with the standards of the countries of the region in which the preservation of natural resources and coastal areas is raised to the highest civilization level.

The island St. Nikola, as they state, is the only remaining untouched authentic natural entity to be preserved for the benefit of all of us, as well as the generations to come. It does not belong to us alone, the island is a botanical world and habitat of birds, animals and fish.

For centuries, the island has been an inseparable part of the town and an integral part of the tradition of living in this area. Generations are conveyed in the spirit of original authentic values of the Mediterranean life, which has been taking place on our island of St. Nikola, on which there is a church of the same name, dating from the end of the eleventh century, an invaluable cultural-historical property.

"Because of everything stated and the responsibility towards future generations, the NGO "Porat Budva-Pizana" will organize a peaceful protest on 26th September starting at 5 p.m. in the town’s harbor.

The protest is organized so that the boats sail in front of the marina’s gate, then from the top of the lantern to the island, the boats connect in a row, which symbolizes the unbreakable connection of the town with the island.

We invite all the citizens who support our efforts to protect the island to join the protest and from the shore give their contribution and necessary support," concluded the NGO.
