July 1, 2018 - The Chapter 27 related to the Environment and climate change is the most demanding and expensive in the process of European integration, and the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism is committed to fulfilling the obligations defined by the Negotiating Position and Montenegro's EU Accession Program, stated an interview with the State Secretary in the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism and negotiator for this chapter, Saša Radulović.

Radulović has been in Brussels for the past few days encouraging conclusions from the meeting of the Subcommittee on Transport, Energy, Environment and Regional Policy, which is in line with the latest EC report recording a certain progress in aligning legislation with EU laws. By the end of the year, it is necessary to have an exceptionally important issue in Chapter 27 Environment, which in the last EC Report states that additional efforts are needed when it comes to water quality, nature conservation and waste management.

From the point of view of the main negotiator on the Montenegrin side, according to Radulovic, the greatest challenges are the preservation of our beautiful country, the protection of the ecosystem, biodiversity, water and air quality, and the reduction of all negative environmental impacts to ensure sustainable development.

"From this point of view, the investment for closing this chapter is an investment for the future of Montenegro and represents an absolute priority for all the responsible ones, both from the public as well as the civil sector and all citizens of Montenegro. Montenegro has already done a great job: our negotiating position has been accepted by EC, and with optimism, we expect the "green light" of the EU member states to continue, which for the final result should have the opening of the negotiating chapters by the end of the year," he says.

"The second block of TE Pljevlja will have designed equipment to reduce emissions of polluting substances into the air, necessary for obtaining an integrated permit. Also, the increased energy efficiency of the new block will contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by applying the "best available technology" (BAT) prescribed by the European BREF reference documents. Hence, Montenegro will realize its commitment through a general increase in energy efficiency, increased share in renewable energy sources, modernization in the energy sector and the development of industrial technology, which also represents the path of Montenegro to the low-carbon society," explained Radulovic.

He highlighted that all the research and analysis so far showed that the largest air pollution in Pljevlja comes from the so-called individual fireplaces.
