There will be no access to fort Mamula and Lastavica island in the future due to the cleaning and preparatory works necessary as an introduction to the planned reconstruction of the object which should be executed by the urban-technical and conservatory conditions.

PR Consultant from the company OHM Mamula Montenegro, Dragana Becirovic, said that there are several reasons for such a decision, starting with the most important one – a precaution because there is no other way to assure the safety of the visitors and the location itself.

“We already had examples of devastation with the works executed on the island – from the demolition of protective covers on wells and the relocation, and removing stones which belong to the fort until the destruction of installed boards and alike”, said Becirovic.

The company OHM Mamula Montenegro, as she said, has formally and legally taken over the location.

“We have approvals for execution of the preparatory works and the Elaborate on the same which represent the legal terms for opening the site, and therefore banning the access to unauthorized persons. The decision will be valid until completion of the works”, said Becirovic.

She stated that the island and the fort would be open for public with free access after the completion of the reconstruction.

“Then there won’t be any restrictions but, on the contrary, we will encourage people to visit the island. The company will, as usual, inform the public regarding the status of the executed works on the island respecting the justified interests for the progress of our joint enterprise”, stated Becirovic.

Based on the permit for preparatory works issued by the Ministry of Sustainable Development and Tourism, OHM Mamula, in September last year, work began on the preparation of the terrain for the reconstruction and adaptation of fort Mamula to turn it into a high category hotel object, with a historic and memorial gallery.

The reconstruction of fort Mamula and the island is planned through the Main design which is in process following the previously issued conservatory and urban-technical conditions and the highest international standards for environmental protection, with the maximum preservation of the original landscape’s physiognomy and all existing elements in this complex.

Preparatory activities to date have been executed in consultation with the authorized institutions whose representatives are fully informed about the status and carrying out the technical documentation, and who have also visited the island in different phases of research done by the international expert team from OHM Mamula Montenegro.

A multi-disciplined team of designers is engaged on this project who carefully and wisely analyze all segments and complexity of the entire object to precisely adjust the logistics of its original organization to its new function and timing.
