Ecologic Society Seeks Inspection in Buljarica buljarica.drustvoekologa.me

October 18, 2018 - Due to the deepening of the canals in the Buljarica Field, the Ecologist Society of Montenegro has filed a complaint with the Inspection Department of Montenegro and the Municipal Inspection of Budva.

The complaint was filed because, as announced by the Ecologist Society, no surface water regulation project was carried out without which the work was done improperly - in the absence of clear guidelines and measures to mitigate environmental impacts.

"The incorrect deepening of the canal can have a negative impact on the water regime of this site, and thus on the present plant and animal world. Project documentation and approval by the competent environmental protection and water management authorities are required to carry out such works.

The above-mentioned approvals allow for the methods of execution of the works, which include the method of opening the drained channels, the method of sediment disposal, the time of execution and the duration of the works. All these processes should be defined in accordance with natural balance requirements," the statement states.

They add that the greatest value to Buljarica is the natural water canals system.

"These aquatic ecosystems, together with forests and marine ecosystems, make Buljarica one of the few remaining wetlands and lagoons on the Adriatic coast. A large percentage of freshwater habitats on the Montenegrin coast have been lost due to poor urbanization, which is why the Buljarica water basins connected to the system should be an eco-tourist destination that, because of its natural characteristics, has a unique tourist value. Its key resources are its water, agricultural land, and forests. Buljarica's resources should be managed wisely to preserve its special and rich biodiversity as well as other ecosystem values.

The biggest gains from such management would be given to the local population, but also Montenegro as a whole," the statement concludes.
